March CEU Webinar: Code Switching: Culturally Responsive Tactics to Translating Services
This presentation outlines our Illinois Department of Public Health–funded initiative to expand access to behavioral parent and caregiver services for Latino families who are not currently receiving services. We move beyond direct language translation and instead apply culturally responsive code-switching practices to ensure that training materials function meaningfully within diverse Latino cultural contexts across the Chicagoland area. Drawing from behavioral science, contextual behavioral principles, and Acceptance and Commitment–based caregiver training models, we describe our systematic adaptation process, community-informed validation procedures, and iterative feedback loops. Attendees will learn how we evaluate functional equivalence (not just linguistic accuracy), incorporate cultural values into intervention framing, and implement fidelity and check-in measures to maintain clinical integrity. This session provides a replicable framework for ethically translating behavioral services while preserving treatment effectiveness and cultural humility.
